E-ink in Slow Motion

E-ink refreshing
E-ink refreshing
What is it with the weird flashing, melting, and decaying pattern that e-ink displays like the Amazon Kindle have when you turn the page? The process is intriguing, yet just slightly too fast to make sense of... so, I filmed it and broke apart the frames so we could examine them closely.

The "melting" pattern is actually the text of the next page fading the current text back to "white." The display flips both images on and off to make sure the page is nice and clean.
